Having read, and loved Pachinko, I knew that I needed to read Min-jin Lee's debut novel, Free Food For Millionaires. I was immediately taken in by the full cast of characters; Casey and her wit and sarcasm, and her boyfriend Jay. The wealthy, kind hearted Ella Shim and her future husband Ted Kim, who is your standard literary rogue. Joseph and Leah Han, Caseys parents, who immigrated from Korea, are trying to maintain the old customs and traditions, while trusting their daughters into chasing the American Dream.
"I’m not interested in fairness. And your God doesn’t seem interested in fairness when He gives out talent. I see mediocrity or ambition most of the time. You have talent, but no ambition. That’s why you’re stuck here.”
What I loved:
Min-jin Lee has written another sprawling family saga, at 577 pages this is a behemoth of a book, but one I immediately sunk into. We follow the life of Casey Han, post graduation where she seems to be having a "quarter-life" crises. Lee keeps us drawn in as we meet her colleagues, boyfriends, family and friends. As we follow Casey she struggles to make decisions related to work, family, and romance; to say she is a flawed character would be an understatement.
